Flexmaster Technology explained!

Ever since golf clubs where hammered out by hand and fitted with hickory shafts the debate about shaft flex has raged on. The customary designations of L, A, R, and S have been a standard since the use of steel as a golf shaft. Unfortunately the manufacturers of clubs can not agree on what is stiff and what is regular. Along came frequency matching but that was all it was, matching one shaft to another but if the shaft you started with was not the correct flex the whole set would be wrong. Golf clubs are always displayed to show off the heads, little or no thought is given to the shaft and grip. This is wrong, the heart of the club is the shaft and it is my belief that more attention should be given to the shaft and grip than to the head. If you have the proper flex in the shaft, the proper sized grip, it is a forgone conclusion you will hit the ball more accurately and consistently than with any club you can buy out of a box. Fitting is crucial.

Now there is a new kid on the block called the FLEXMASTER a device that matches shafts by deflection and the strength is calibrated in "pounds". We now have an absolute value on the shaft. We know where we are starting from. If we want a club to play in the R range we know we must have a shaft that reads in 38,39,40 pound range. We can make it a SOFT R at 38 pounds or a HARD R at 40 pounds. The FLEXMASTER is accurate to .005 of a pound. We can also do this in the L flex, A flex or S flex. In other words we have a starting point to build our clubs from, in a set of eight clubs we can now make all the shafts the exact same strength and we accomplish this by butt trimming the shafts until they are all the same.. All we can do is weaken a shaft, if the shaft is to weak we must select a stronger flex and weaken it to our desired poundage. A set of shafts can be done in a matter of minutes and they are all matched. At the same time as we are determining flex or poundage we can also locate and mark the spine in the shaft. All shafts have spines and it is important that these spines are orientated in the proper location when assembling the clubs. All FLEXMASTERS now come with a "spinefinder" built into them. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to have these spines aligned, it makes the difference between a goIf club and a great golf club. At GOLFIX we can orientate spines on your existing set of clubs to make them play better. We have aligned spines in shafts for the past 12 years, this is not new technology.

Now that we are ready to assemble the clubs we determine the playing length by trimming from the TIP end of the shaft. If the head weights are within tolerance we will end up with a perfectly matched set of clubs with 4 to 5 cycles between each club. The cycles between clubs are recorded using a frequency analyzer. Frequency analyzing is old technology not accurate in determining flex but very useful to check our work after we have made all the proper trimming of the shafts on the FLEXMASTER.

Now it is possible for you to have clubs like the pros play, pros do not play clubs out of a box. All their clubs are rebuilt to exacting specifications and we can do this for you. You won't buy size 6 golf shoes because they were on sale (if you wear size 10) would you?, so why would you buy golf clubs that do not fit. Remember your swing did not come out a box, neither should your clubs. .

With shaft placed in Flexmaster the finished club length has been determined by adjusting measuring bar(C). The force gauge (B) is zeroed out and then preloaded with thumb screw(D) to 3lbs of pressure, at this point the shaft will spine itself.

The "zero" button, third button on the right hand side of force gauge(B) is depressed once, the shaft is pulled down to the stop by the deflection mechanism(E), and the strength of the shaft is recorded on the force gauge in pounds. This reading is the maximum strength of the shaft. However the shaft can be weakened by sliding the butt through the butt stop(A)

Flexmaster technology provides an accurate and consistent method of measuring shafts during the assembly of new clubs. It also allows us to calculate the exact strength of an existing club so we can reproduce a replacement club that will feel and play the same as the rest of the set.

You cannot do this with frequency, only with a Flexmaster. The Flexmaster gives readings in pounds (as close as 5/100's) which can be converted to the L,A,R,S,XS system or to the Precision system of 5.5, 6.0, 6.5 etc.

Constructing clubs that meets our clients needs is our paramount concern. By using the Flexmaster, as part as our club construction, your new clubs may even exceed your expectations.
