The essence of good singing comes from the ability to create a "freely
expressed" tone.
Everything a singer does through warm-up, posture, breath management, production,
articulation, vowels, range & register, intonation, physical and mental
preparedness is directed at creating a sound that is relaxed.
Often, singers
believe the tools we use are the methods of singing. They are not.
We have all heard singers use vocal acrobatics and styling that often
distracts and pull the listener away from the song.
The voice is a
unique instrument. Most everyone has one, and each is designed a little
differently than the other. In ensemble singing, it is important to have
each vocal part singing, not only in unison, but also with the same resonance
and vowel shape.
Expression and
emotion are very important ingredients to your singing performance. Your
listening audience must see that "you believe" in what you are
singing before they will "buy in" or "believe" what
you are saying. Inflection, pauses and facial expression are some of the
many tools used in creating a performance. Again, these tools are to enhance
the song, not the singer.
